Spring is just about here and so are a few new course offerings. Soon you will find a course on ADHD and one on Creating Social and Emotional Successes. I feel like we are all looking for new information on these topics and Acorn Education wants to continue to bring you relevant topics that help you work better with the children and families in your program.
Today, I sit in front of my computer pondering the next course that would be interesting for all of you. I have wanted to write a course to support those little bullies so that they too can be successful within our programs. I think I may start there. This being said, I am always interested to hear what you want to learn about. What engages your brain and gets you excited about the work you do with children? If you can't find it hear on our website, please reach out and plant a seed with me so that I might sit down one day soon and write a course that will best support what you need in your early learning environment.
Two surgeries down. I am feeling great. Tomorrow I meet with the oncologist to determine our next steps in combatting this breast cancer. I am back to work for now and in fact, will be at Think Small in St. Paul tonight. Thank you again for all of your support as I move through this process. It is no doubt that your positive thoughts are making a world of difference. Thank you for your support on my journey. I am blessed to have each of you.
I am blessed to have so many followers who check in often to see what new training opportunities we have available. Today, I wanted to write about something a bit different. My journey has taken a bit of an off road approach. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on December 28th and have surgery once so far and will be headed back on the 29th of January. Many of you have supported me through email, phone calls, text messages, prayers on Facebook etc. I feel greatly blessed to have you all along for my journey. This week is filled with lots of catch up as after surgery, I will be resting and mending. I hope to keep you all updated through social media. You never know where your own personal journey will take you and of course you don't know which path your little ones will take, but I have learned that support is important and that there are many out there that will support us. Thank you again for each of you and all that you do! Feeling Blessed.

Stories come alive when flannel board is included for children. I love retelling stories and in fact just created a new set of flannel board pictures for a class project. Our new flannel board set is The Three Little Pigs. I love Pinterest for ideas and then you have to figure out how you are going to make the flannel board. One new material I recently found is a product called milk filters. I bought mine at Fleet Farm. They are a bit expensive at about 15.00 but sure help to make a colorful character when you are not so artsy yourself.
With the filters you simply cut to an 8.5 X 11 sheet and run it through your printer. I used color ink, but you can print just in black and white and then hand color your art yourself. I then hot glued mine onto white felt for more durability, but you would not have to.
Flannel story activities increase participation and understanding of the story and hold interest for many children. Caregivers can move the pieces to show action or to tell the story simply by moving pieces in and out of the board. If you have not ever tried to make your own flannel board, I hope you will consider this fun story telling option.
I made the frame too simply by removing the glass from a frame and adding a piece of felt of any dark color. I chose a black piece of felt.
